Friday Night! | Arveene

arveene.jpg

Not sure why I haven't tipped you off to the deck wrecking mayhem that is Arveene yet. Listen 'ere, bruv.

Arveene (from Dublin) is DJing FRIDAY night at Lauren Flax's White Lightning party at Home Sweet Home.

Arv is probably one of the hottest DJs right now in Ireland, he's got invites to play with Erol at Trash (RIP) and Dazza Emerson at the Underwater parties. He jumps genres with ease and amazement. That wild dancefloor mashup of Rage Against the Machine that Erol dropped at Tribeca Grand back in May was Arvo's. Party-starter is an understatement. Arveene is the fucking party.

Arveene and Johnny Moy hold down the craze on Dublin's Spin FM. Go over there for a few special Arveene mixes that give you a taste of how crazy tomorrow night is going to get. Happy Days....

Look:

More Friday night lights after the jump....

Moonwalk at Happy Ending

moonwalkwithdavidbruno.gif

I'm starting off my bi-monthly residency with the War + Moon crew: Rezound + Workweek at Happy Ending on Wednesday.

Cheap booze (2 for 1 drinks before midnight) and really good beats. Swing through and say hi, dance if you feel like dancing: weeknight raving is where it is at!

I recorded Arveene's set from White Lightning on Friday night, but didn't eject the USB drive before unplugging the IKey. I think it's a lost cause, anyone know if I can recover it?

White Lightning at Home Sweet Home KRAMES!

Cobra Kai raids NYC this weekend.

Home Sweet Home hosts DJ Krames from the Richmond based party collective: Cobra Kai TONIGHT (Friday March 9th).

If you haven't heard of Cobra Kai by name, you've heard at least one of Krames' original tracks in da club. Cobra Kai just released an EP (mysteriously, its got like 20 tracks) Dishwasher Safe. You can pick up the EP from our boys at Turntable Lab and its well worth it. Club bangers and Krames' mash up of 'Shoulder Lean' that is slayin' all the clubs from Balti to the Bay.

Krames - TtotheA

Nick the Duke manages affairs and handcrafts the sick graphics for which Cobra Kai is reknowned. Keep your eyes peeled for some Duke designs for People Don't Dance No More.

Krames did a sick mix for Arveene's radio show in Dublin and we'll have it here for you this weekend. Stay tuned!

Justine D gets RVNG | Delia & Gavin Live April 4th

The RVNG crew (in addition to throwing all of the bananas Fixed parties) puts out a bunch of out-there, but amazingly killer releases.

This past year, they've produced some vinyl cuts by Tim Sweeney under his Rvng of the Nerds alter ego. The most recent edition, Betty Botox, gets some serious play at Slap You in Public Towers.

In addition to disco wax wonkism, RVNG has a stellar mix CD series by some of 212 and 215's hardest working DJs. Previous RVNG Mx releases have featured Julian S Process, Tim Sweeney, and Mike Simonetti & Dan Selzer as "Crazy Rhythms." These are deeeeep, crate digging mixes. There's not much new music, but treat a RVNG Mx as you would a personal mixtape. All include completely mind blowing classics that seem effortlessly contemporary in a very personal way. Not to mention, the mixes are produced under lock and key in highly limited quanitities and feature Kevin O'Neill's fantastic designs. I think they only produced 5 of the Crazy Rhythms CD...I've never even seen one.

The newest mix features a look into the the pysche of NYC's dance music doyenne, Miss Motherfucker, Justine D. A trip through the delightfully darker side of the last 15 years of outsider dance music, and a little slice of one of Justine's DJ sets; RVNG Mx5 is mixtape for the rainy season. From the Orb to Delia & Gavin, to the Human League, and back to the Zombies: this is the music that has influenced every artist that is making dance music right now. You grew up listening to this music, even if you've never heard it before.

This mix was created in Scotland with Optimo's JD Twtich on the knobs, there are only 1000 copies (995 more than usual), and its only $5. Hop to it at RVNG or at Turntable Lab.

People Don't Dance No More Edition Disco(blizzard)drome

jacques.jpg
Holy shit the weather was horrible last night. Snow, rain, sleet, high winds.

It wasn't easy for me to walk 2 blocks to Element, so I can imagine what everyone went through to get there.

Big thanks to everyone who made it out and danced with us last night!

As was expected, My Cousin Roy and Jacques Renault absolutely destroyed it.

For those of you that couldn't make it, here's a bit of their set from last night!

Happy Ending on Wednesday | Popstatic

Wednesday March 21st, 2007

JUST ADDED!! ED UFO!  (San Francisco, Thyne Eyes)

w/ residents: Rezound + Workweek and David Bruno
Happy Ending
302 Broome Street
10 p til...
1/2 price drinks til midnight

We are back with another edition of Happy Ending Wednesdays. My boys Rezound + Workweek and I are happy to present a very killer lineup this week!

Popstatic is coming in from Chicago just to do some damage to your ears...

You may remember 1/2 of Popstatic (Jarrett Spiegel) from his work with Chicago beat-electricians Walter Meego. Popstatic is his new project with his production partner Salva.

I'm going to let their Popstatic Press Mafia take it from here:

Popstatic is a production and djing duo composed of Chicago-based dj/producer Jarrett Spiegel (aka Popstatic) and San Francisco-based producer/dj Paul Salva (aka Salva). The two birthed the project out of a mutual love for disco records and all of the classic disco sound's varying offshoots. Through a nearly 15-year-old friendship, these two have grown together musically over time, despite their ever-increasing distance.

Growing up together in the Chicago area, the two shared a love for golden-era hip hop records at a very young age and remained similarly inspired over years of musical maturation and changes. Around 2000, Paul moved to Miami and began his head-first dive into the scene's bass and party cultures. Meanwhile, Jarrett was grooming his djing and programming skills as a college student in Kansas (with a brief, particularly inspiring, year-long stay in London). When the two returned to their respective homes (Paul in Wisconsin and Jarrett in Chicago), they both became involved in serious music projects. Paul's production was becoming a huge staple in Milwaukee's surprisingly strong hip hop scene while Jarrett's work with Chicago electronic pop band Walter Meego raised a name for him as a dj in Chicago.

Now, the two have begun the Popstatic project to finally combine their kaleidoscopic musical visions and ideas into one cohesive whole. With a production aesthetic that's designed to combine Jarrett's love for sampling dusty disco records with Paul's future-bent, bass-y hip hop production; the two should be making a lot of noise in 2007. Currently, or at least until they live in the same city again, Jarrett is handling the Popstatic live presence while the productions develop via net-based file sharing. In the meantime, they've got a pair of bootlegged mash-ups that they've completed and have plans to complete a few releases worth of material by the beginning of summer.

Myspace: Popstatic - Pass That

Salva has released music on Altered Vibes (a UK hip hop label that put out some of RJD2's early material) that he did with J. Todd and Epcot as Vanishing System. Other work between Salva and J. Todd is currently being pursued by Domino under J. Todd's Leo Minor alias, which is sort of a twisted pop act not unlike Gorillaz or Outkast. Domino recently put out a small run of white labels of their single "Don't Bring Me Down" - a banging hip hop re-interpretation of the ELO track. He's got a full-length in the works with Kansas City's MC Approach (who's past music has come out on Coup D'etat) and is also currently working on tracks with Rhymesayers MC and acclaimed battle rapper Mac Lethal. His tracks have been played on Solid Steel and Gilles Peterson Worldwide.

Its been a long time coming for these two but the Popstatic legacy, though in its infancy, feels ages old.

Pocketknife & Cousin Cole run the Flagrant Fowl label and DJ all over town (Cuz DJ'd for us back in November).

They just put out a new EP that looks be the hotness, keep checkin' Turntable Lab for its release:

Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Pocketknife just dropped his new EP with Cousin Cole on their Flagrant Fowl imprint. This sophomore release, "Tougher Than Featherz," features Pocketknife remixes of Arthur Russell's voice/cello composition "She's the Star", Suicide's "Ghost Rider" and a bangin' blend of R. Kelly's "Ignition" with Tone Loc's "Wild Thing." Pocketknife's DJing and production output typifies the eclectic philosphy of Flagrant Fowl Records.

Jarrett from Popstatic was kind enough to let us post up his blistering set from the night.
