You haven't been outside in weeks. Go. If I know you personally and you don't go to see Hot Chip, we aren't friends.

72 Degrees

I'm here. Its cooler (purely in temperature) than where you are. Be back soon.

Go see Hot Chip if you live in NYC. If you can get to Chicago go to Lollapalooza.

If you can't do either, sit in front of an air conditioner and listen to my podcast and jump around in your underwear.

I love you, I hate you.

When is now, Now? Now.

Sorry to dork things up here, but I've been doing a lot of reading recently.

Here are two recommendations.

1. Daniel Pink's Book A Whole New Mind
It's my new bible. If you read this blog regularly, it should be yours as well.

2. This new HBR article: "What Happens When the Economics of Scarcity Meets the Economics of Abundance?"

I haven't finished it yet, but it started with this, so its got to be good:
"Life in the Long Tail is a busy routine involving the downloading of anything digital from the Internet; paying for some things, such as iTunes, but sharing and trading many others; creating and maintaining blogs, some of which are more frequently visited today than network television shows; contributing and editing items on the ever-changing open-network encyclopedia, Wikipedia; and when watching television (rarely), doing it when and where it is convenient to do so, through such devices as TiVo and cell phones. It is a world where everything digital is available at all times."

Discuss the Modern Age in the comments.

Whitest Boy Alive | Erlend Øye

Typically, Wednesday mornings are very rough for me. Not sure why, but I can never wake up. I threw my Ipod on random this morning, which I never do, and this new track came up.

Whitest Boy Alive - Burning

Instantly, I recognized Erlend Øye's haunting, but fragile voice. It woke me right up. I investigated a bit further and found that Whitest Boy Alive was originally an "electronic" side project for Øye. As you can hear, its no longer electronic. If you like Kings of Convenience and Erlend's solo work, you'll love this. I've been listening to it on repeat all morning.

Enjoy.

Whitest Boy Alive - Inflation (good timing Errr)
Whitest Boy Alive - Above You

New Walter Meego | Romantic EP, NYC Live Debut

I will post a full rundown of the weekend's activities later today or tomorrow.

I know repetition works: Tomorrow night WALTER MEEGO live NYC debut 9:30 @ Pianos.

Here's a new track from their forthcoming Romantic EP on Brilliante.

Walter Meego - Romantic

It's funky, sleazy, & sexy. Just the way we like it.

The EP is b/w Wanna Be A Star (featured on Inaction:Action Vol. 5) and a bunch of remixes. You'll probably get a taste of the whole thing this weekend. I also got word that Super Meego will be DJing early at the Modular Monthly on Saturday! More info to come.

Also of note, Mamoun's Falafel opens today on St. Mark's between 2nd and 3rd Aves.

--------

The WEEEEEEKEND

I know the weekend has begun when I listen to Annie Mac live on the BBC. Great music from, what seems to be, a nice girl. Friday Day of Meego

Saturday
Sonic Youth & the Yeah Yeah Yeah's play McCarran Pool. FYI, the beer line is fuckall, either come drunk or don't plan on drinking.

PS1's Warm Up is pretty rad again this week as another day/evening option. Rub-n-Tug turn things out and Escort plays shimmery disco LIVE. Crazy, right?

If you want to stay in/go to Queens. The Water Taxi beach throwdown "Rebound" has Metro Area from 8 pm and what looks to be sand...

Modular's NY outpost office puts together their monthy hoe-down back in Manhattan at Midway (formerly Scenic). It reads like a Fixed party...Totally kooky Holy Hail plays live, JDH & Dave P play cocaine sex jams, and SUPER MEEGO livens things up early. I'll be pogo'ing around the place.

(I might post a bunch of MP3s of all the bands mentioned above tomorrow...if you are nice)

Stay real.

August 14, 2006

Mondays (Case of)

I hit Walter Meego live, Sonic Youth, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Modular party. Needless to say I don't feel like little baby Jesus.

Thanks to the Walter Meego crew for an awesome weekend. Full details to come when I feel better...

Walter Meego, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth, & the Modular Monthly | News and Other Half-Truths

Walter Meego is what happens when you grow up listening to Daft Punk but your parents are paying for guitar lessons, not turntables. You know that's totally up my alley.

They absolutely killed it on Friday night at Pianos. I think they won over a few fans as well...Acid basslines and killer hooks, from really nice guys. If only the show were at 1 AM instead of 9:30 PM...

NYC needs to see these guys more often. Hopefully, we'll make that happen in October.

Saturday was probably the nicest weather that NYC has seen in 2 years. We trekked out to McCarran Pool with 4 liters of John Daniels and Coke. We rolled into the Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Sonic Youth show and only got 1 confiscated. Plus, the powers that be fixed the beer situation. We got lit. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs rocked as the sun set, drawing heavily from their first EP and their first LP. I haven't heard them play Rich in like 2 years. Awesome. Sonic Youth killed as well, I've never seen them before. I hope to catch them again in the near future.

After dinner at Mamoun's on St. Mark's, we rolled over to the Modular NYC monthly party. Super Meego opened up, Holy Hail played live, and Dave P and JDH rocked the party until 4:30. Fantastic music all night long. Next month (Sept 19th) Modular brings the neo-rave Klaxon's over for their 1st NYC appearance! Expect lots of whistles and sirens.

News/Half-Truths:
Buy Basement Jaxx tickets today at Noon. October 10th and 11th at Webster Hall.
(presale password = crazyitchradio)

Buy The Knife tickets before they sell out. CMJ Show at Webster Hall Nov. 1st.

Hot Chip is playing CMJ at Webster Hall Nov. 2nd. I assume that Justice will be playing with them.

Para One will be here to start off Labor Day Weekend. August 31st at Element with that ho Uffie.

NEW SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO!!!
Simian Mobile Disco - Animal House
Simian Mobile Disco - Tits & Acid

Cold in August | Wednesday Checklist

I just got over a head cold. Who gets a cold in August? I've been asking. Apparently, lots of people I know. Bizarre.

Back to the rocking out.

Tonight (Wednesday)
Revenge of the Bookeaters @ the Beacon Theater with Jon Stewart, Sufjan Stevens, David Byrne & more. The theme is "Words or music: Which is better?" I say shut up and sing. I'm going, I'll report the verdict tomorrow.

If I weren't, I would be rocking out at the Friction Party at Sine-E:
Apes & Androids Foundry Field Recordings
Cassettes Won't Listen
Head over to Pop Tarts Suck Toasted for some MP3s of FFR and CWL.

If you go, let me know how all 3 bands are. They are all on my list to check out, especially Apes & Androids. Check out the crazy live clip on their website.

New podcast & DJ mix are coming soon. Subscribe to ensure prompt delivery. Also put your email in the box so you can get Slap You updates emailed to your lazy ass.

Bang-Ladesh

The Bookeaters benefit was a good time on Wednesday. I donated $20, but didn't get a hug. The music was fantastic and a welcome surprise, but J.Stewart killed it. Lots of reviews, pics, comments, concerns elsewhere.

Now its the penultimate weekend of summer motherfuckers.

Friday
South Street Seaport has a good lineup tonight. Will it rain?
Ted Leo & the Pharmies
Tokyo Police Club
6 PM
I really want to see TPC, I've been digging their EP. If you like Tapes 'n, Arcade, Wolf P, Sunset Rubdown, etc...you'll probably like this:

Tokyo Police Club - If It Works

My buddy Mr. Blair DJs the sex tech beats at the very cool (and Swedish) Good World bar on the LES tonight from 10 pm.

Also of note, the Belgians invade this weekend. Armed not with waffles and chocolate, but rather spacey disco, leftfield breaks, and obscure techno edits. You've got 2 chances to catch one of their trademark all-over-the-map DJ sets this weekend.
THE GLIMMERS
@ APT Friday Aug. 25 10 PM
Presented by the Even Further Crew

Saturday
THE GLIMMERS @ PS1 QNS
Saturday Aug. 26 3 PM

You can whet yourself with a listen to a few of their DJ sets at Play FM. You've got to register, but its well worth it.

Get 'er done.

August 30, 2006

August 31st: The Coolest Night in NYC...

and I'm gone.

Besides the VMAs and Justin Timberlake...the hipster universe collides.

I really can't say which party I would choose, but the ED BANGER party should be pretty blotto. PARA ONE & SEBASTIAN are reason enough for you to go, but the night is jammed packed with hotness. It will be just like the basement of Paris Paris. I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas & Guy-Manuel show up...

On the other hand, Ellen Allien really destroyed me when I saw her at Circo Loco last summer, but the crowd sucks at Hiro. What conflict you must have if you can get into the Virgin Mobile party....Argh the choices you have, you assholes.

ENJOY the MOTHERFUCKING LAST MOTHERFUCKING WEEKEND OF SUMMER! Snakes on a plane.

UFFIE (10:30), PARA ONE (1-2), DJ MEHDI (11:30-12:30), SEBASTIAN (2-3), FEADZ (12:30-1) and BUSY P (3-4)!
