April 2006 Archives

April 4, 2006

a nine year party...

this has nothing to do with anything really, but just thought it was interesting to note the UK's Guardian reported that St. George's Medical School in London published a study about a man who apparently had taken upwards of 40,000 pills of E over the last 9 years. at one point he was up to 25 a day. read the rest of the article to be further horrified.

Everyone is DJing at My House...My House

I'm back in business. Sorry for the lag...April and May in NYC will Slap Your Ass silly. Great stuff coming up. I'm heading to see the Gorillaz tonight and, from what I've read, it will be awesome. Neneh Cherry, Bootie Brown, De La Soul, Ike-Motherfucking-Turner, Roots Manuva, and Shaun "Visa Troubles" Ryder.

Try and get tickets to see the Raconteurs on Friday at Irving Plaza. I'm not going to pay $150 to see them, but I do like their music.

This is big news: no more heavy record boxes...Numark might have finally done it. They just announced the release of iDJ2. If this works like they are describing it, all of the assclowns who "DJ" at the bars/parties I frequent won't have any excuses for not learning to beatmatch. I'm going to try and find a demo of this thing and test it out...If it in fact works, stay tuned for an announcement of the inaugural Slap You in Public "Eat the Cat Poop" party...

I Never Meant No Harm

Gorillaz killed last night. Very cool to see big industry money spent on good music and a unique presentation. Opera for the international jet-set, downtown folks.

Highlight was definitely De La Soul killing on Feel Good Inc. Shaun Ryder on Dare was pretty sweet too. This is a picture of the puppets up in the balcony (via Brooklyn Vegan).
They were Nazis about picture-taking in the Apollo, so I didn't get any pics from last night. I wanted to snap some of the amazing Jamie Hewlett cartoon visuals playing during the set.

I heard that some tickets were released for the next two nights. Do your best to get up to this show. Very, very cool.

UPDATE: If you aren't in NYC, the lovely MSN network will be streaming the final show (Thursday night 4/6) live.

I just looked at my calendar. April is a ridiculous month for shows, I need to get healthy immediately. I'll post the line-up tomorrow.

Sexy Party Time

RSVP for this party. Totally sexytown. The Walkmen aren't really my slice of pie, but the Duke Spirit kill. Added bonus: the hipster DJ contingent and free beer. A Slap You in Public endorsed party (This is on paper only- I can't guarantee that it won't blow goats when you get there).

Druzzi Mouse

New Rapture track leaked...Get it while its hot. I've got it on repeat right now. This is from their recent recording session in Los Angeles with Paul "Phones" Epworth and Ewan "Dirty Beats" Pearson ...I dig it.

Rapture - W.A.Y.U.H.

Sorry, EP asked us to take it down...it was an unfinished mix. Stay tuned.

...some culture (sort of)

if you haven't seen the plans for the New Contemporary Museum of Art, the intersection of Bowery and Prince is going to get a shot of some culture. in a couple of years, you'll be able to get more than restaurant supplies and cheap dim sum here -- it'll hopefully be the home of some weird, ridiculous, and (possibly, though i doubt it) thought-provoking modern art. if not, at least the building's exciting.

Comedy in the Raw

I'm officially obsessed with local comedians Aziz Ansari and Nick Kroll. Among a zillion other gigs, Aziz hosts Monday nights at the UCB Theater Crash Test. Nick hosts "Oh, Hello" Thursday nights at Riffi.

We went to Crash Test on Monday and were blown away. Aziz and his buddy Paul Scheer were pitching their new teen girl magazine, YB, "Young Bitch". To the right is one of the featured articles...Why have sex on a bed, when you can do it on a table?

Nick did his bit as "Nico Payamas," Argentina's #1 Comic. Every time I see this guy, he gets funnier and funnier.

Tomorrow (Thursday) Aziz guest hosts with Nick at "Oh, Hello". I highly recommend it.

Oh, and go see the Sounds tonight. Sweden in full effect.

Dying to Say This to You...

If all The Sounds songs sound like the same song, but that song rocks the shit out of the place, do The Sounds still rock? Maja Ivarsson will spit in your face and tell you she doesn't give a shit. Neither do I. I haven't seen them before, but I was impressed by their show at Irving last night. Energetic and Acne-clad, the Swedes blew through an hour-long set. I really thought that I heard the same song twice a few times. Nonetheless, the crowd was bouncing and Maja crowdsurfed...Not bad for a Wednesday night.

Talking Clap Your Heads Say Woo

The Clap Your Hands Say Yeah boys are back in town tonight for a two night run at the Bowery Ballroom. You might know CYHSY from their unprecented artist-direct distribution deal, or from any number of their shows that you've seen by now. I've never been floored by these guys live, but after a full blown national tour I'm excited to see how they've come together as a band.

Tonight & Tomorrow at Bowery Ballroom

Glorious Ninth Tonight @ Pianos 8:30 pm

Holla! Do yourself a favor and go see The Glorious Ninth tonight at Pianos.

These guys have been steadily gaining ground in NYC and their live shows are stuff of legend. I've been told that giant pink transvestite bunnies are commonplace.

TG9 held down a residency at Sin-e in March and are currently featured at addVice's uber-hip First Taste party at Hi-Fi.

Tonight's show is a CD release party. Get there at 8:30 for a beer. Show starts at 9 pm.

Pills and Thrills (Pt. 1)

I've slowly been posting more and more about dance music. There has been a lot of exciting music coming out of the scene recently.

The zeitgeist is Get Physical.

These cats have their fingers on the pulse of dance music.

Get Physical won Label of the Year from DJ Magazine. Individually, label owners DJ T, M.A.N.D.Y., and Booka Shade are responsible for the biggest dance tracks of last year (maybe of the last 2 years).

"Mandarine Girl" by Booka Shade and "Body Language" by M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade blew away every club I went to in Ibiza. House DJs, Techno DJs, Trance DJs...it didn't matter. Everyone plays their tracks. "Body Language" won track of the year at the Ibiza DJ Awards.

I saw Booka play live at the Revolver party in Miami during WMC. If the volume would have been louder, they would have had the set of the conference...

Long story short: These krauts fucking kill.

I wasn't aware of their post on Friday, but it looks like Music for Robots posted about Booka Shade too. I'll send you over there if you want more info on Booka, et. al.

Booka Shade's new album "Movements" is brilliant. I think its out now. Go buy it.

Booka Shade - In White Rooms (via MFR) (Money's favorite track)
Booka Shade - Night Falls (via some dude) (My 2nd favorite)

I'll put up the summer stormers when I get home...Enjoy these for now.

**Personal note: For those of you who remember my "Freedom Party" 2004 @ Rothko & our lovely entertainment SNAX...Get Physical signed him, so what's up now??**

(Not So) Secret Shows

Brooklyn Vegan is all over the upcoming mid-90s secret shows. Break out your flannel shirts and put a sock on your cock:

Pearl Jam @ Irving Plaza (How to get tickets)
Red Hot Chili Peppers @ Irving (How to win tickets)

Not sure that I have the attention span/energy to get these tickets. I'd love to see RHCPs rock Irving though. That was the first (of many) cassettes that I tore the Parental Advisory tag off of as a kid...

What do you mean why is the cover ripped Mom? Columbia House Tape Club damaged it in the mail!

Alright, there has been little to no commenting going on recently...so I'm giving you the opportunity to post your feedback on the site. What do you want to see more of, less of, etc...no posting until there are 5 comments with feedback in the comment section of this post...
